  4. Country Description:  Qatar is a traditional emirate, governed by the Al-
  5. Thani family in consultation with a Council of Ministers and a legislative
  6. Advisory Council.  Islamic ideals and beliefs provide the conservative
  7. foundation of the country's customs, laws and practices.  Qatar is a modern,
  8. developed country, and tourist facilities are widely available.

  10. Entry Requirements:  Passports and visas are required.  Visitors must have a
  11. business or personal sponsor.  For further entry information, travelers can
  12. contact the Embassy of the State of Qatar, Suite 1180, 600 New Hampshire
  13. Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037, telephone (202) 338-0111.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Basic modern medical care and medicines are available
  16. in several hospitals and health centers in Qatar.  U.S. medical insurance is
  17. not always valid outside the United States.  Supplemental medical insurance
  18. with specific overseas coverage has proven useful.  The international
  19. travelers hotline at the Centers for Disease Control, telephone (404) 332-
  20. 4559, has additional useful health information.

  22. Information on Crime:  Crime is generally not a problem for travelers in
  23. Qatar.  The loss or theft of a U.S. passport abroad should be reported
  24. immediately to local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
  25. Useful information on safeguarding valuables, protecting personal security,
  26. and other matters while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of
  27. State pamphlets, "A Safe Trip Abroad" and "Tips for Travelers to the Middle
  28. East and North Africa."  They are available from the Superintendent of
  29. Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  31. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  32. the country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use or
  33. trafficking in illegal drugs are strict in Qatar and convicted offenders can
  34. expect jail sentences and fines.

  36. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register at the U.S. Embassy can obtain
  37. updated information on travel and security within Qatar.

  40. Farig Bin Omran, in Doha, Qatar (opposite the TV station), P.O. Box 2399.
